about

As friends growing up in Memphis TN, we also became musical partners in 1991 and would write songs collaboratively on weekends and even over the phone. We also recorded all the time on Matt's Tascam 424, and gathered at a studio/rehearsal space he built at his house.

Rob and Matt were in college near one another in Texas and played regularly together, Jeff was at Missouri where he fronted the band 10 shy. In the summer of 1998, Jeff and Rob had just graduated and settled in to jobs in Memphis and Houston respectively. Matt helped his campus pastor at Texas Lutheran build a studio space in his home and traded some of that labor for studio time with a digital (ADAT) recorder.

So we gathered up a crop of songs, and got together in Seguin, TX after Christmas, and laid down most of the tracks in the next few days. Matt added some overdubs over the next few months, and then Rob got a new Roland digital studio, and we imported all of the tracks to that. Rob finished a few more dubs and the mixing with collaboration from Matt at Rob's place in Houston.

In the summer of 99, Matt had graduated and he and his wife Priscilla were back at camp in Indiana on the way to seminary in Columbus, OH. Rob had made essentially final mixes (the versions you hear on these recordings), but the band name on that copy was "The Pickups." We had used many band names over the years, and shortly after that settled on "The Far Criers."

About that time, we put the project aside while Jeff was dealing with his mother Susan's cancer. As noted in the liner, we dedicated the album to her memory, as she was very special.

The next year, we finalized the running order and the artwork, (under the professional hand of Jeff's future wife Amber), and we released our first CD!

Unfortunately, the discs we used have not stood the test of time, so in order to get high quality digital recordings, we uploaded the summer of 99 version. The only difference is a guitar part that Rob later added to Sad Girl. We really like that part, but the clicking and skipping from the disc makes it unlistenable. Hopefully one day we'll find a better copy and upload that version!
